In a field trial the effects of very high levels of pig slurry and treated sewage sludge on the organic matter and physical parameters of a sandy clay soil were studied. After a 15 year application of organic matter in the form of 5 t/ha/annum of sewage sludge an increase in the organic carbon content of the soil was identified. This had a positive effect on the porosity and bulk density of the soil. The stability of the soil structure, however, was not influenced. Lower application rates of treated sewage sludge (2 t of OM/ha/annum) as well as various doses of pig slurry (2 t and 5 t OM/ha/annum) had no influence on the physical properties of the soil. A significant decrease in organic carbon was observed after stopping the application of pig slurry.
