Field trials with Miscanthus x Giganteus and indigenous grasses were started at two sites in Central Switzerland in 1992. The results show that it is possible to harvest big amounts of biomass which can be used as fuel. At year 5 the yields of Miscanthus reached 20 t dry matter (DM) per hectare. Fertilisation with mineral nitrogen and slurry did not increase the yields. The highest yields (up to 19 t DM/ha) with grasses were reached with timothy (Phleum pratense L.) and reed canary grass (Phalaris arundinacea L.). Chemical analysis shows that Miscanthus is better suitable for combustion than indigenous grasses. Its ash content was only 2 % DM because of lower contenta in silicium, potassium, calcium, iron, nitrogen, sulphur, phosphorus, chlorine, and cadmium.
