In the course of seed pathological studies carried out between 1986 and 1990, seed lots of basil (Ocimum basalicum), perilla (Perilla frutescens), hyssop (Hyssopus officinalis), muscat sage (Salvia sclarea) and common motherwort (Leonorus cardiaca) were tested. Alternaria alternata was found on all the plant species examined. The toxin produced by the fungus not only plays a role in the development of diseases on the plants, but may also cause germination inhibition and germ distortion. Botrytis cinerea was observed on hyssop, Colletotrichum gloeosporoides on basil, Fusarium oxysporum on perilla and common motherwort, and Stemphylium botryosum on basil and muscat sage. Among the storage fungi, Penicillium sp. and Rhizopus stolonifer were isolated, as were thesaprophytic fungi Chaetomium globusum, Cladosporium cladosporioides, C. herbarum, Coniothyrium fuckelii, Harzia acremonioides, Humicola sp., Memmoniella echinata, Microascus sp., Phoma herbarum, Stachybotrys chartarum and Trichotecium roseum.
