Ten sweet corn inbreds extracted from an open-pollinated variety. Super Sweet DMR x Indonesian Early, were randomly chosen. A diallel crossing system among ten inbred lines were made. Estimations of genetic variance and types of gene action for fresh ear yield, sweetness and other important agronomic characters were made from a replicate yield trial planted in the early (E) and late (L) rainy season in 1980 at Thailand National Corn and Sorghum Research Center. The analysis indicated a large dominance genetic variance (VD) for number of marketable ear in 1980 E and for number of total ear and total fresh ear weight in 1980 L. Thus, for these characters, dominant gene action was important. Large additive genetic variances (VA) were observed in other characters such as number of non-marketable ear, weight of non-marketable ear, sweetness, pericarp thickness, plant height, ear height, number of kernel row and ear length. Therefore, these characters exhibited additive gene action and are probably controlled by many genes. The broadsense and narrowsense heritabilities estimated in both seasons for all characters ranged from 59.05 to 92.47 and 11.66 to 77.27%, respectively.
