Relationship between soil moisture, root depth and moisture extraction patterns of some crops [Sabah].

After saturation capacity of the soil, 50% of the soil moisture was lost due to the pull of gravity. 64% moisture of the field capacity was available for the crop use and 36% moisture of the field capacity was unavailable to the crops due to permanent wilting point of the soil. Root depths of the crops varied from 55 to 100 cm. Among crop root depths, sweet potato and corn had the highest and cabbage had the lowest root depths. Root constants of the crops also varied with the root depths. Sweet potato and corn had the highest and cabbage had the lowest root constants of 17.78 and 9.78, respectively. Moisture extraction pattern was observed in sweet potato and corn and the lowest in Kai Choy and cabbage. Each crop showed the highest moisture extraction per cent in surface soil layer (0-20 cm). The highest was with Kai Choy and the lowest was with egg plant and corn. With increasing soil depths moisture extraction per cent was decreased in each crop.
