To determine the effect of agricultural practices on the structure of the microbial community degrading cellulose, organic matter content and the degree of compaction of soils were taken samples of plot soils prepared for the sowing of tomato cultivation (Lycopersicon esculentum), elephant grass (Pennisetum purpureum), paprika (Capsicum sp.), sugar cane (Saccharum officinarum) and other areas with their/its natural vegetation. The number of microorganisms degrading cellulose was determined through successive dilutions method and sowing in petri plates with agar cellulose (Trejo 1981). For the determination of the organic matter content was used the method of Walkley and Black (Jackson, 1970). Concerning the physical properties, was used the apparent density as index of the state of compaction of the soil. The results showed that the number of microorganisms degrading cellulose is smaller in soil with a high degree of compaction. The decrease of the number of microorganims degrading cellulose suggests an increase in the degree of compaction of the soil in light of the fact the microorganims degrading cellulose are important in the aggregation of the soil and the stability of their / its biostructure.
