The objective of this paper is to introduce some considerations about the actual situation of agricultural economic education and research so as to sketch some of its implications in the Mexican case. Agricultural eduaction and research have only acquired recent importance. The registration of agricultural undergraduates comprises about seven percent of total undergraduate registration, in contrast to two percent in 1960. Agricultural economic research faces serious future difficulties, among which are: financing, finding qualified personnel, and internal estructural problems. there exists no integrated institutional system and there is a lack of scientific exchange between researchers. Until recently the role of agricultural economic education and research has been one as support, resulting in a subordination of other areas within agriculture.
