Nutritional status of infants and children from the low income group of Ibadan.

Extract: Nine hundred fifteen infants and children living in three different areas of Ibadan were used to determine the nutritional status of urban poor children during the first two years of life. Anthropometric measurements were taken to determine weight, height, mid-arm circumference and tricep skinfold in addition to the age of the infants. Nutritional status classification used weight for age, height for age, weight for height as criteria. There were no significant differences in the mean height, mean weight, mean mid-arm circumference and the mean tricep skinfold in each age group and with sexes combined in Ibadan North, Ibadan East and Ibadan South. The means of these parameters were however significantly lower than the reference standards. When the sexes were separated, significant differences were found within and among the areas for boys whilst none existed for girls. 50% of the subjects in Ibadan North had low height for age, 33% of the subjects in Ibadan East and 29% in Ibadan South. It would thus appear that a good number of urban poor children suffer from malnutrition. (author).
