Four Salmonella strains comprising 2 S. chester and 2 Salmonella 4, 12 : e, h :- strains isolated from poultry were selected for studying the enterotoxic activity in rabbit-ligated ileal loop. In the present experiment enterotoxin production was demonstrable in the cell-free supernatant of Salmonella monophasic variant culture (Salmonella 4, 12 : e, h :-). The marked absence of enterotoxic activity in whole culture preparation was probably due to the suppression of enterotoxic effect by the living organisms. Interestingly, the strain which showed enterotoxic effect was isolated from the intestinal content of a bird suggesting that the organism was associated with diarrhoea.
