Preparing child nutrition professionals for the 21st century.

Child nutrition programs (CNP) will not operate in the 21st century as they do today. The profession needs to address the issue of preparing CNP management staff to meet the challenges of the next century. The National Food Service Institute (NFSMI) has conducted several national surveys of school nutrition managers and district directors/supervisors. Analysis of demographics suggests that a large percentage of CNP management staff will retire in the early 21st century. This will provide an opportunity to increase professional standards for individuals filling vacated positions to ensure the knowledge and skills necessary to effectively operate CNPs in the future. The authors of this paper discuss present and future trends creating this need for change and their implications for professional development. A Vision for Child Nutrition Professionals in the 21st Century is presented along with strategies for preparing CNP professionals for the future. Both were developed as a result of a 1993 NFSMI conference on personnel.
