Spurs of five apple varieties, distinguished in four leaf area classes were controlled during the following year. An area ranging from 30 to 70 cm2 according to the variety was necessary to induce blossom of 50% of the spurs. Spurs with wide leaf area in the previous year set more fruits and had less fruit drop. Whole fruit weight per spur increased with leaf area; effect on single fruit weight was less clear cut as this was largely dependant on fruit number. Wide differences were found among varieties suggesting differences in leaf efficiency.
