Determination in laboratory and field tests showed that the chitin synthesis inhibitor, diflubenzuron, has very high activity and outstanding effect against the eggs and larvae of the Asian corn borer, Ostrinia furnacalis and the rice stem borer, Chilo suppressalis. When egg masses of the Asian corn borer or the rice stem borer were dipped in acetone: water (3:1) test solutions for one minute at a dosage of 100 or 150 ppm of diflubenzuron, the percentage of hatch of 0.5-day-old eggs was reduced by 100%. However, 3.5-day-old eggs were insensitive to diflubenzuron. Thus, diflubenzuron must mix with carbaryl for inhibiting egg hatch for all egg stages. A mortality of 88-100% of the larvae of the Asian corn borer resulted when larvae of the 1st-3rd instar fed on the diet with 3 ppm concentrations of diflubenzuron. One application of 0.045 % diflubenzuron granules at the late whorl stage on corn planted in the spring reduced the number of larvae of 1st generation by 80%. Diflubenzuron with carbaryl mixture against the rice stem borer has also outstanding ovicidal effect on the treated rice seedlings.
