Insecticide resistance in Heliothis armigera in Australia.

Increased knowledge about the ecological genetics of resistance in Heliothis armigera has given us insight into why resistance to synthetic pyrethroids has been contained, in general, over the last four years. Field experiments have suggested that selection pressure is not uniform in the different larval instars. Both resistant and susceptible larvae less than four days old were killed when exposed to commercial applications of synthetic pyrethroids. Selective mortality occurred in very young larvae only when they were exposed to sprayed leaves on which the concentration of insecticide had either decayed or been diluted by plant growth. Changes to the present strategy are limited not only by the way in which selection operates and by the mobility of the species, but also by conflicts between the pest control needs of different agricultural crops such as cotton, sunflower, and sorghum, by the need to maintain confidence in the efficacy of pyrethroids and by the withdrawal from sale of alternatives to the pyrethroids.
