Biology and chemical control of yellow stem borer in Sindh, Pakistan.

Investigations were carried-out on the biology, ecology and chemical control of yellow stem borer in Sindh. Field estimates of stem borer (in thirty sweeps), proportion of adults in light catches and larval population of different species indicated that the yellow stem borer, Scirpophaga incertulas was the dominant species followed by Sesamia inferens. Female moths laid eggs in clusters from 9 to 71 with an average of 31. Average incubation, larval and pupal period was estimated 4.8,23.3 and 5.5 days, respectively. The number of generations however, varied according to the availability of host and climatic conditions. Of the five insecticides tried, Solvigum followed by Diazinon gave better control of borer. Solvigum insecticide also demonstrated greater efficiency through establishing higher residual as well as persistent effect. Increase in paddy yield due to the use of Solvigum was also statistically highly significant.
