Effect of NH(4)-N on lentil productivity.

Earlier studies showed that nitrate assimilation system in lentil (Lens culinaris) was poorly developed and the postflowering nitrogen fixation characteristically declined. But the NH+(4) assimilation into amino acid was not limited by the system. Thus the investigation was undertaken to find out the status of post-flowering N-assimilation under supplied NH(4)-N. Different sources of ammonium were applied just after flower initiation as soil mixed and foliar applications. The sources of NH(4)-N were ammonium phosphate, ammonium nitrate; ammonium chloride, ammonium sulphate and urea. Soil mixed N and foliar treatments were made at 50 kg N/ha and 5 kg N/ha respectively. Phosphorus and potash were supplied at standard rates. The experiments were conducted under field condition at Jessore and Jamalpur Bangladesh. The data revealed that NH(4)-N application did not show much improvement in yield or affect yield attributes of lentil either at Jessore or Jamalpur. Seed-N analysis showed that there was no effect on the seed protein. However, yield and seed protein content of lentil in general were higher at Jessore. Soil-N analysis showed N to be at critical level both at Jessore and Jamalpur.
