Growth of moso bamboo (Phyllostachys heterocycla), 1: Internodal growth.

This report deals with the relationship between internodal growth and height of moso bamboo (Phyllostachys heterocycla (Carr.) Mitford) shoots. The total length of the bamboo shoot at each growth stage was adopted as a parameter of growth time and was compared with the internodal length of the bamboo shoot during the growth stage. The results were as follows: (1) A curve showing the relationships between the ratios of internodal lengths to diameters and the internodal numbers from the base in mature bamboo consisted of three different parts. (2) The total number of internodes in a bamboo shoot in the early stage is almost the same as that in a mature one. (3) A linear relationship exists between the internodal lengths and the internodal numbers in the elongating parts of a shoot on a log-log scale. (4) The relationships between the logarithms of the internodal lengths of an internode number and the heights of bamboo shoots can be expressed approximately by a linear equation. The slope G. of lines by the equation is related to the internodal number, N, and is expressed by the following equation: G = 1/20.586N(0.872).
