A number of economically emerging countries continue even today to struggle with difficulties in using pesticides. These difficulties include: 1) unsatisfactory product quality, with consequent toxic threat to both plants and humans, 2) incorrect labelling and inadequate instructions for use, resulting in danger for plants and humans, and 3) pesticide residues in harvested products. By means of the supraregional pesticide service project and other bilaterial pesticide projects the Deutsche Gesellschaft fuer Technische Zusammenarbeit (GTZ) endeavours to support economically emerging countries in their efforts to improve quality control. Three examples from Panama, Madagascar and Costa Rica demonstrate the methods of procedure, work and results of bilateral pesticide projects and cooperation with the supraregional GTZ pesticide project. By means of formulation control this project supports efforts to evaluate and improve product quality and promotes the development of effective quality control laboratories in partner countries.
