In this paper, immunocytochemical methods are used to study the frequency of appearance of three endocrine cell types (S, L and gastrin cells) in the upper and lower portions of jejunum and ileum of normal and paratuberculous sheep. Comparing the results obtained in normal sheep with those in affected sheep, it is observed that in the latter there is an increase in the number of S and L cells. This increment observed in sheep paratuberculosis is similar to that reported for the human coeliac disease, probably because both diseases are associated with an intestinal malabsorption syndrome, even though their aetiology is very different.
