HCN [hydrocyanic acid] content in forage sorghums and Sudan grasses.

The HCN content in three forage sorghum and three Sudan grass varieties, developed in Yugoslavia, was investigated. The HCN content was put into a relationship with a growth stage, temperature, rainfall and temperature and rainfall jointly. Negative correlation was found between the growth stage and HCN content which can be considered almost as a rule in sorghum, but not necessarily in Sudan grass varieties. No reliable conclusions can be derived from statistically processed data about temperature, rainfall and HCN content in sorghum and Sudan grass. Drought can be one of the factors promoting the HCN synthesis in plants, but not always, for a large variety of correlation coefficients in this respect was found. Due to lack of rainfall accompained with high temperatures in midsummer caused an increase in HCN content in sorghum and Sudan grass in all three years of investigation, but still it was too low to provoke any harmfull effect to animals.
