An experiment was conducted with 112 broiler chickens (Hubbard) for a period of 49 days to study the effect of cottonseed meal on their performance. The chickens were randomly divided into 4 groups (A, B, C and D) of 28 birds each. Four supplement protein combinations (100 % soybean meal, 0 % gossypol; 49 % soybean meal and 51 % cottonseed meal - 90 ppm gossypol; 35 % soybean meal and 65 % cottonseed meal - 116 ppm gossypol; and 21 % soybean meal and 79 cottonseed meal - 143 ppm gossypol) were utilized in this experiment. The main results can be summarized as follows: (a) - Mean body weight, feed conversion ratio and mortality of chickens were not significantly replaced by cottonseed meal. (b) Carcass yield, carcass weight, breast weight, legs weight, liver weight, spleen weight as well as the carcass content in crude protein and ash were not significantly (P>0.05) affected by the cottonseed meal feeding. (c) The carcass content in moisture and fat were significantly (P<0.05) influenced by the type of meal. The results indicated that cottonseed meal can be used to replace part of the soybean meal in broiler diets without adversely affecting on the performance.
