From January 1981 to February 1983, the caecal contents and the cranial and caudal mesenteric lymph nodes of 409 normal slaughter pigs, coming from Italian (n.237), Dutch (N.139) and Russian (n.33) farms, were examined for Salmonella spp. Salmonella organisms were isolated from 43,4% of the italian pigs, 76,2% of the Dutch ones and 51,5% of the Russian ones. The serotype most frequently isolated was S. typhimurium. It is necessary to control salmonella diffusion in our country both limiting the import of pigs from countries where the particular conditions of the farms, the climate and the environment favour the spreading of salmonellas and applying the strictest hygienic measures when slaughtering pigs.
