Nutritive value of urea-treated sugarcane bagasse [Philippines].

An increase in the level of urea resulted to an increase in the nitrogen content of the ensiled urea-treated bagasse (URTB). However, nitrogen losses were incurred when the silos were opened for sampling. Although the level of urea did not significantly affect the lignin content of URTB, increasing levels of urea apparently increased in vitro dry matter digestibility (IVDMD). On the other hand, prolonged storage of URTB significantly decreased IVDMD. In vitro organic matter digestibility (IVOMD), however, did not change with prolonged storage of URTB. Among urea levels, the 4% level was the best in improving digestibility of bagasse. Ensiling URTB for 2 weeks yielded better digestibility results compared to the other storage periods.
