With the view of establishing the energy and protein requirements a number of 18 Holstein calves ranging from one week to weaning and weighing between 30.2 - 87.0 kg were used in 2 experiments. A number of 2 types of diets was used, one based on Inlavit, compound feed and corn silage and one based on skimmed milk (supplemented with a liquid protein concentrate), compound feed and gramineous hay. The feed intake was higher by 15 percent in the second experiment (with skimmed milk) which led to higher weight gains. The energy requirement for maintenance was estimated to be of 96 kcal ME/kg0.75 and the efficiency of using the ME as NE was of 78.0 percent. Based on these estimates and on the specific equations the energy and protein requirements for suckling calves were determined.
