Studies on powdery mildew of pepper (Capsicum annuum L.) caused by Leveillula taurica (Lev.) Arn.

The response of five local varieties of pepper (capsicum) to natural infection by Leveillula taurica was found to vary under two different climatic conditions, dry and rainy seasons. Infection was higher in all host varieties in the rainy season. Mildew production was moderately high (21% of leaves affected) in the long-fruited and large-fruited varieties in the dry season. The lowest infection occurred with the small fruited varieties. The most prolific conidiospores were produced by mycelium on the round fruited variety, larger haustoria in the tissues of the large- and small-fruited host, the longest unbranched conidiospores occurred on leaves of small fruited varieties while the more branched occurred in lesions on the leaves of large- and medium-fruited varieties.
