In two year field experiments the possibilities of weed control by application of herbicides and undersowing grass or clover at different times of the growing period were studied. The competition between cover crop, weeds and undersowing herbage has been examined also. The growth of undersown herbage depends on which species is chosen and what time it was sown. The total number of weeds was reduced by undersowing grass and clover in early stage of the cover crop development. Grass companion plants reduced the yield of winterwheat more than clover companion plants. Highest yield was realized when undersowing grass or clover was carried out at tillering stage of winterwheat. Within the crop rotation the effects of insufficient weed control could be found even two years later.
