Glufosinate-ammonium, trade name Basta, is mostly used for weed control in a number of plantation crops: orchards, vineyards, citrus, rubber, oil palm and others. Moreover it was tested even for weed control in vegetables. In Germany, most trials were conducted for late preemergence applications in slowly emerging crops such as carrots or onions. Basta at a rate of 3 l/ha = 600 g a.i./ha controlled a wide spectrum of annual weeds including grasses. Phytotoxicity to the crop plants could not be observed if the product was applied prior to the begin of emergence of the crop. - Further trials with applications before seeding or transplanting vegetable crops showed that there is no risk of crop damage via the soil if normal or double dose rates are used. In a further trial with lettuce cultivated under plastic it could be shown that there is no risk of phytotox via the vapour phase.
