Effect of the time of flower head harvesting on the yield and quality of common chamomile [Chamomilla recutita (L.) Rauch.] raw material.

The effect of harvest time on mass of chamomile flower heads, essential oil content, and its chemical composition and contents of flavonoids was investigated. Mass of flower heads from one plant and mass of one flower head were highest in the first harvest (week after beginning of blooming). Essential oil content in raw material from the first and second harvest was similar (0.36 and 0.33 percent respectively) and decreased to 0.21 percent in the third harvest. Content of B bisabolol oxide and chamazulene in essential oil decreased with delaying of the harvesting date, contrary to A bisabolol oxide, spiroether, and farnesene. There was no distinct effect of harvest time on flavonoid content.
