Trends in total factor productivity in Indian agriculture implications for farming systems research.

The present study examines the trends in total factor productivity for crop sector across states and overtime for India. It shows that total factor productivity for crop sector has declined consistently for all the states overtime. Thus, viewed from the economic standpoint crop production has become unsustainable. However, trends in partial productivity indicate that land and labour productivity have been increasing over time whereas capital productivity has been declining. The trends in total factor productivity are found to be increasing for the two cereal crops- wheat and paddy which have experienced technological breakthroughs. From the standpoint of ecological security, trends in land productivity are of critical importance. These trends need to be interpreted on the basis of trends in productivity per unit area in conjunction with the trends in soil degradation and water depletion.
