The feasibility of village-level beam trawling was examined at Daru in November 1984. An 11m local sailing canoe, a 4.7 aluminium dinghy and a 7.3m work boat were tested. The sailing canoe had the highest catch rates and the lowest operating costs. Evidence indicates a significant, under-utilised resource of export-quality prawns which can be fished by village fishermen in Western Province. Provided that the local fish plant is prepared to handle an increased quantity of export-quality prawns, the main constraint on the development of a village-level prawn fishery appears to be the lack of skilled technical manpower to organise the fishery.
