Chile's fruit industry: a myth or a juggernaut? An overview of Chile as an export competitor.

In Chile in 1965, there were 53,000 ha of fruit and vines. By 1990 plantings had increased to 172,000 ha, and exports had increased from 50 m. US dollars (1974) to 992 m. US dollars (1991). Some 30 percent of plantings are yet to come into production. Chile has become the world's largest fruit exporter, supplying 14 percent of the international fruit trade. Australian exports represent 1 percent of world trade. Victorian fruit exporters cannot compete with Chile directly, but could compete successfully by securing niche markets, through emphasis on market segmentation and on product differentiation.
