Three bait traps for wireworm catches were tested between 1994 and 1996. Population densities and risk of crop loss due to wireworms were best assessed by using the so-called plate trap. The risk of crop loss was forecasted correctly in 85 to 90 % of the cases in sugar beet and maize by means of plate traps. A seed treatment with insecticides or a soil treatment with granules is economicallly justified in 90 % if the mean number of wireworms per trap caught in 20 plate traps per field is higher than 0.5. In potatoes the accuracy of risk assessment is only slightly above 50 % and therfore not reliable. Investigations in 543 maize fields treated with a soil insecticide against wireworms (according to the Swiss legislation for Integrated Production) show that soil treatments were economically justified in only 15 % of the fields. Thus, the use of plate traps would contribute to a substantial improvement of accurate applications of soil and seed insecticide treatments. Crop loss by wireworms is not related to specific crops grown in previous years on the same plot. Our investigation in 186 fields revealed a clear relationship between organic matter content of the soil and wireworm damage. In fields with organic matter contents above 5 % we found a mean reduction of the plant density due to wireworm attack of 8 to 12 %.
