At the experimental farm of the Georg-August-University Goettingen the keeping of pregnant multiparous sows in a large group supported by an individual electronic feeding system was compared to single crates and to housing in smaller groups, i.e. in pens with individual feeding crates and seperate lying and dunging areas. An influence of the housing-system on productivity and fertility could not be verified. Fights for hierarchy and food resulted in an increased risk of injury in the large group compared to the smaller group. But the increased possibility for movement in the larger group caused less pathological changes, especially swellings and ulcers, at the rear cannon bone and the fetlock joint. Although the sows in the single crates had not much space to move they spent most time standing or sitting compared to group-housing. Especially the older sows in single crates showed an increased number of biting sterotypies. The pigs in the larger group responded to unnatural force of eating in a queue by a comparatively constant order of eating. Unambiguous advantages for animal welfare of either the large group or smaller groups could not be verified.
