This paper presents results of investigating the degree of efficiency of herbicides in cultivation of sunflower, and their influence on the oil and fatty acids content in sunflower seeds. The following was found: -All combinations of herbicides showed good selectivity on sunflower. -Efficiency coefficient was high in the first 5 variants in all the three years of the duration of the experiment. -Efficiency coefficient varied from year to year: in 1975-90-96.72 at the first estimate, 76.00-91.85 at the second; in 1976, 93.00-99.63 at the first estimate, 76.59-96.00 at the second; in 1977, 98.69-100.00 at the first estimate, 96.00-100.00 at the second, in all 12 variants. -The oil content in different years and repetitions varied largely: in 1975 the oil content difference between the control and treated variants was minor, being, from one repetition to another +- below 1%. In 1976 the oil content was somewhat higher than in 1975 and 1977. The differences were insignificant too, being, from one repetition to another +-1.56%. In 1977 the difference in the oil content among repetitions and variants was negative, being 1.94%. The oil content in the sunflower seeds tested was within the limits of the genetic potential and in some repetitions (1977) it was close to the lower limit of the tested sunflower variety. -Using gas chromatography, presence of 18 fatty acids was found.
