In 1987-1988 studies were made on 15 sunflower hybrids sown at a plant density of 40,50, 60, 70 and 80 thousand plants/ha on slightly limy sandy soil with a humus content of 0.9-1.2 o/o and a good NPK supply, in order to determine which hybrids could be most succesfully grown on sand and what the optimum plant density was. Over the average of 15 hybrids and 2 years, the highest achene and oil yields were achieved with 50 000 plants/ha and the greatest oil content with 60 000 plants/ha. Precipitation promotes the influence of plant density, while drought reduces it. An increase in plant number considerably increased the oil content, up to 50 000 plants/ha, above this level the acheme yield declined to such an extent that the oil yield/ha dropped. The plant density responses of the varieties examined only differed with respect to the oil content. The optimum plant number proved to be 50 000 plant/ha, except for the variety Rempol /60 000 plants/ha/. Compared to the standard hybrid NS-H-26, the highest oil and achene yields were given by Florakisz, Blumis and Viki, followed by Citosol-3, Citosol-4 and Antlia, so these can best be recommended for cultivation on sand. Viki, J-550, Antlia and Florom-206 had the greatest oil contents. A correct choice of the hybrids is decisive for successful cultivation, since there are great differences between them in achene and oil yield and in oil content.
