Agro-physiological studies on rice under different eco-edaphic zones of Pakistan.

The 14th and 15th International Rice Salinity and Alkalinity Tolerance Observational Nurseries (IRSATON) were sown at various research stations in Pakistan during summer 1989 and 1990, respectively. Tolerance to salinity/alkalinity was recorded in terms of phenotypic acceptability at tillering. Tolerance at vegetative and reproductive stages was scored at 1-9 scale besides paddy yield at maturity. The 14th IRSATON (73 varieties/lines) was tested under soil EC 5.4 and pH 8.1 at Atomic Energy Agricultural Research Centre (AEARC), Tandojam and under soil EC 8.0 and pH 8.9 at Rice Research Institute, Kala Shah Kaku (RRIK). A total number of 101 lines was tested under soil EC 7.5 and pH 8.7 at Sadhuke (UASF/PARC). Of these lines, based on tolerance score at maturity, 134 were tolerant, 47 moderately tolerant and 13 sensitive at AEARC. Their corresponding figures for RRIK were 7, 43 and 23. At Sadhuke, based on economic yield, 37 were tolerant, 14 moderately tolerant and 50 were sensitive including 33 which failed to survive/flower. The lines were generally consistent towards salinity/ alkalinity at vegetative and reproductive stages. The l5th IRSATON (43 varieties/lines) was grown at RRIK under soil EC 7.7 and pH 8.6 and at Sadhuke under soil EC 10.3 and pH 7.9. Based on tolerance score at maturity 19 lines were tolerant, 16 moderate and 9 were categorized as sensitive partly due to lack of photoperiodic requirement. At the other site (Sadhuke), based on flowering data and paddy yield, 20 were tolerant not necessarily comparable to RRIK, ten moderate and 13 were sensitive to prevailing salinity/alkalinity. The 16th IRSATON backlog material (47 lines) screened at Sadhuke (1990), 6, 15 and 26 turned out to be tolerant, moderately tolerant and sensitive, respectively based on paddy yield and flowering behaviour.
