Results of a comparative study of shoot forming for 10 potato varieties in field conditions and the culture of the initial tuber callosity are presented. The presence of connection between an average number of axil branches per one potato plant and the average number of shoots per one explantant has been stated. The possibility of using the characteristics of axil branching as a marker of shoot forming in vitro for potatoes is being discussed.
