Coconut red mites (Oligonychus velascoi Rimando) are found to feed on coconut leaves (Cocos nucifera L.) in the southern part of Thailand especially during the dry season. The rates of development of egg, larva, protonymph, deutonymph and adult at room temperature (24.05+-0.07 deg. celsius) and 59.05+-3.4 % RH were 92.8 hours, 14.0 hours and 10.8 hours, quiescent, 33.3 hours and 14.8 hours quiescent, 24.3 hours and 22.3 hours quiescent, and 19.27 hours, respectively. Each female mite oviposited 39.83 eggs with oviposition period of 9.5 days. Laboratory evaluation of 15 acaricides and insecticides with the direct spray method to the adult females were studied. The pesticides which provided 100 % mortality at the lower recommended doses were Selecron (profenofos), Acrex (dinobuton), Neoron (bromopropylate) and Posse (carbosulfan). However, Akar 338 (chlorobenzilate), Kelthane (dicofol) and Hostathion (triazophose) gave 100 % killing at recommended dose. Less effective pesticides were Dicarzol (formetanate hydrochloride), Omite (propagite), Plictran (cyhexatin), Mitac (amitraz) and Morocide (binapacryl). No mortality occurred when treating the adult females with Median, Nissorun (hexythiazox) and Mieronize wettable sulphur (sulphur).
