The development of sludge in the biological process of sewage purification as well as its utilization for the fertilization of soil are explained. The composition of Riga's sewage sludge including the content of heavy metals and the agrochemical data of dry sewage sludge is presented in tables. The basic requirements as to the quality of the sludge used as a fertilizer as well as factors limiting the use are discussed. The possibility to use the "Daugavgriva" sludge for the fertilization of agricultural lands is considered.
