In thepresent studies, tree species of Analipus-Heterochordaria complex, Analipus japonicus, Analipus filiformis and Heterochordaria abietina f. gunjii were investigated to clarify their development and growth in laboratory cultures. At the results of these studies, following matters were clarified. In chapter l, the culture study of A. filiformis was performed. Five stages were recognized through a developmental process of the zoospores on the basis of qualitative changes in the germlings development. In chapter 2, the culture study of H. abietina f. gunjii was performed. The developmental and morphological characters of this species were clarified. The morphogenetic patterns through a developmental process of H. abietina f. gunjii bore a remarkable resemblance to those of A. japonicus and A. filiformis except the morphogenetic pattern of prostrate thalli. In chapter 3, the culture studies of several strains, whose growing districts were different, were performed in Analipus-Heterochordaria complex. The physiological characters on growth and development of prostrate and erect thalli were clarified. The physiological characters of the strains varied according to geographical distribution even though they were same or closely related species.
