1. When examined in non-sterile conditions, the tested strains differed in their effect on the mass of above-ground parts, roots and pods, nitrogen content and nitrogenous activity of the pea varieties. All R. leguminosarum strains synthesized gibberellin -, indole - and phenol-type substances. 2. Strain 8g demonstrated the highest average efficiency. However, the varieties Petit Provancal and Fruskogorac had the highest yields of pods with strains 5g and 3g, respectively. 3. The differences observed among the strains may be attributed to the competitiveness in relation to the natural R. leguminosarum population in the soil as well as to their compatibility with certain pea varieties. In view of the above, the selection of R. leguminosarum should take in account not only the activity of nitrogenase and dehydrogenase but also compatibility with pea varieties grown and the natural R. leguminosarum population in the soil.
