During 1988 and 1989, bulk samples of milk were collected and analyzed in January, March, June and September on 20 farms (43 barns) with above-average milk performance, distributed all over the CSFR. The analyses of milk were performed in six laboratories. Attention was paid, in particular, to the crude protein content. In the whole set of 191 samples the total protein was 3.30 per cent (s=0.17), caseine content 2.57 per cent (s=0.71), pure protein content 3.10 per cent (s=0.18), nonprotein nitrogen 28.5 mg/100g and urea 24.7 mg/100g. The Black-Pied Lowland cattle had a significantly (P<0.01) lower content of caseine (by -0.26 per cent), pure protein (by -0.19 per cent), total protein (by -0.19 per cent), total dry matter (by -0.42 per cent) and solids non-fat (by -0.25 per cent) as compared with the Bohemian Pied Breed. As to the year seasons, the lowest values of caseine content and total protein content were recorded in July. Significant differences (P<0.01) were observed in the results concerning all the studied milk components, as measured in the different laboratories. On the contrary, there were no significant differences in the composition of milk of cows in the first lactation and in the second and successive lactations.
