A research was carried out from October 2, 1990 throughout September 30, 1991, at the Santa Rosa Experimental Station, located in the province of Valdivia (Chile). To determine the level and yield of starch from 22 genotypes from improved Chilean germplasm cultivars collection was the main objective of this research. The second was confirm the correlation between specific gravity and chemical method for the starch content evaluation. The experiment was design in a complete randomized blocks with three replicates. Pimpernel was used as control, this cultivars is more important in the industry for his yield and high starch content. The follow parameters were studied: yield, specific gravity, chemical starch content and starch yield (qqm/ha). In total yield evaluation, the Pimpernel yield was 458,90 qqm/ha. Thirteen genotypes were statistically similar to the control, in a range of 567,48 to 313,85 qqm/ha. In the starch content evaluation, Pimpernel confirm the high starch content indicated for this cultivars (20,22% starch). Eight genotypes were statistically similar to the control, in a range of starch content of 18,80 to 21,33%. In relation to yield of starch, ten genotypes were similarly to the control, in a range of 73,65 to 105,62 of starch qqm/ha. Finally it was found a positive correlation between specific gravity and chemical method for the evaluation of starch content.
