Results of the research on the behaviour of some physico-chemical characteristics of three semiarid soils (Cambisol, Gypsisol and Solonchak) as well as the response of a barley crop after application or sewage sludge is presented here. Trials were carried out at the Experimental Station of Aula Dei (CSIC, Consejo Superior de Investigaciones Cientificas, Zaragoza). From the statistical analysis of the data it can be said that the soil and the different sludge amounts applied are the main factors of variability, while the way of sludge application is irrelevant for most of the studied parameters. Sludge application improves most of the physical characteristics of these soils, increasing the porosity and the moisture retention and decreasing the bulk density. Refered to the chemical characteristics, a decreasing in the pH value is produced and the electrical conductivity increases. Soil fertility substantially improves, increasing the contents of organic matter, carbon and nitrogen. When applying 320 t/ha of sludge an increase in the content of heavy metals (apart from cadmium) in the soil is produced. In the grain of barley neither cadmium or plomb are registered, while chrome, nickel and zinc contents are sometimes lower in the treated barley than in the control. Nevertheless metal content does not exceed the amounts permitted by the European Union and the Royal decree-law 1310/1990. Yield obtained per square meter after sludge application is higher than in the control plots. The great volume of sewage sludge produced can convert this material in a good fertiliser of important economical value, but when using sludge special care must be taken, in order to avoid environmental hazard, such as soil and water contamination by heavy metals.
