Development of alternative corn production technologies in paddy fields.

Corn production after wetland rice offers opportunities for productivity and income of farmers. However, crop establishment during dry season is constrained by limited water for irrigation. One intervention introduced to supplement irrigation is the construction of shallow tube well (STW) pumps. Determining a good combination of corn variety, appropriate fertilizer recommendation, integrated pest management (IPM) and irrigation management that will maximize crop production and economic benefits are also important. Results of the on-farm trials conducted in Bacabac, Camiling, Tarlac and Tomling, Malasiqui, Pangasinan [Philippines] from 1994 to 1996 dry season croppings, showed that planting hybrid varieties and application of combined inorganic and bio-organic fertilizer (BOF) show good performance in the areas studied. Preliminary results showed that among the varieties tested, P3016, C520A, C900M, and IPB929 produced better yield and higher net benefit in the three sites. Interview with the farmers revealed that they prefer hybrid varieties since they get higher yield, thus, higher net income. They also favor the use of Trichogramma evanescens as one component of IPM. Application of six times irrigation [before planting, at 4th leaf stage, 25-30 days after planting (DAP), blister stage and during dough stage] provided higher yields and net benefits. A positive response was observed on the options provided to the farmers regarding corn variety and management technologies.
