Seed quality of maize (Zea mays L.) and peanut (Arachis hypogaea L.) grown as monocrops and as intercrops in low and high external input systems.

The effects of low external inputs (LEI) and high external input (HEI), and cropping systems (monocropping and intercropping) on the chemical composition and quality of seeds of corn and peanut were evaluated. A follow-up test on the seeds derived from the different production alternatives was also done. The first experiment was conducted during the dry season (Jan to Apr 1995) and wet season (Jun to Oct 1995) planting at farmer's fields and the second experiment was done for one cropping (Jan to Apr 1996) at CSSAC [Camarines Sur State Agricultural Coll.] Experimental Farm, Pili, Camarines Sur [Philippines]. The protein and fat content, viability, vigor and storability of corn seeds were not affected by inputs. Fat content in peanut seeds increased LEI but not the amount of protein. The attributes of peanut seeds were not influenced by inputs but were affected by cropping systems. Seed derived from the 1:1 row intercropping scheme was unfit for planting purposes due to low germination and poor vigor. The seeds derived from the different production alternatives had similar growth and yield when grown using either LEI or HEI fertilizers.
