After results of germplasm collection and breeding, results of var. selection are reported. Following the results of the multilocational trial 89-90, a bush var. is proposed for diffusion under the name of Urugezi (1378/4), as well as a climber named Flora (Flor de Mayo). The trial on competitivity of new var. in the local mixture showed that only 1 var. can maintain or even increase its proportions in the mixture while all other var. have decreasing proportions each season. The research program for introduction of climbing beans has shown once more the big yield advantage of climbing beans over bush beans, especially for the var. Umubano. A trial comparing wooden stakes and maize plants as supports for climbing beans showed that a proportion of 50 percent wooden stakes and 50 percent maize as support are optimal for bean production.
