The individuality of an organism can be demonstrated on the DNA level by variety of molecular techniques. Forensic applications, parentage control, genetic diagnosis and gene mapping are some of the applications of DNA typing. DNA fingerprinting is characterised by simultaneous typing of a large number of loci using multi locus probes. Microsatellites are highly polymorphic loci containing a variable number of dinucleotide repeats which can be used for individual DNA typing - DNA profiling. Advantages of different DNA typing systems and possibilities for automation of DNA profiling are discussed. The application of microsatelites for DNA typing in cattle and parentage control is demonstrated using a set of 11 microsatellites.
