Influence of moisture content and drying temperature on the seed quality of two corn cultivars.

Moisture content had a distinct effect on seed germination except at 50 deg C heated air temperature. Consequently, 30% and 25.0-35.0% were identified as critical moisture levels for a natural (ambient) and artificial method of drying, respectively. Moreover, the optimum drying temperature was 50 deg C for high-moisture and for low-moisture seeds. Exposure of seeds to extremely high temperature of 66 deg C, however, resulted to complete loss of seed viability. Unheated air drying turned out seedlings with shortened root length with a rise in moisture level. Such a trend was not observed on shoot length, indicating that separate mechanisms controlled radicle and shoot growth. Finally, significant differences in equilibrium moisture content (EMC) were noted between varieties suggesting appreciable variation in the chemical composition of the two cultivars adopted in this study.
