Cassava production and research in Guangdong province of China.

Statistical data indicate that cassava production in Guangdong showed marked yearly fluctuations from 1971 to 1988, but that the tendency was increasing, with an average annual growth rate of 7.55 percent, 0.97 percent and 6.60 percent for total production, harvested area and yield, respectively. The use of cassava in Guangdong has changed markedly since the early 1950s. Depending on its utilization level, this can be roughly divided into three phases: (1) initially cassava was used mainly for human consumption, (2) later, human consumption and industrial processing were both important, and (3) presently, cassava is mainly used for industrial processing. Starch and monosodium glutamate are the traditional cassava industrial products. However, with the improvement of cassava industrial technology, some new cassava-based products, such as alcohol, glucose, fructose, etc. are becoming more important in recent years. Cassava research was neglected in the past. From 1956 to 1965, extensive research was carried out, but there was lack of continuity. Systematic research was initiated only after the cassava research program was reestablished at UCRI of GAAS in 1982. According to the current status of cassava production, domestic cassava demand and existing land resources, the production, area and yield of cassava in Guangdong are expected to increase in the coming years.
