Among the determinant factors of an efficient managing system of breeding animals, the feeding strategy plays an important role, taking into consideration both quality and quantity of the diet. To check up the importance of this strategy, an experiment was carried out at Romsuintest Peris S.A., on a total number of 100 gilts belonging to Large White, Landrace and LS 345 Peris breeds and distributed to four variants (factorial of 2 x 2), which were different comparing the dietary protein level (14.5 and 12.5 per cent CP) and in daily intake of compound feed in two periods of pregnancy (0-90 days: 2.2-2.6 Kg and respectively 91-112 days: 2.6-3.0 Kg). The results have shown that: - the fertility and prolificacy were less influenced by the amount of feed allocated in the first 10 days after mating as well as by the increased dietary protein (16.5 instead of 14.5 per cent CP) - the weight gain and backfat thickness performed during gestation were very similar for all variants, except of slight superiority for the gilts with stimulative feed (2.6-3.0 Kg). - the litter size and weight at birth were not significantly influenced by the quality and quantity of diets. - for the two periods of pregnancy (0-90 and 91-112 days) we recommend a daily allocation of 2.2 Kg and respectively of 2.6 Kg compound feed with 12-12.5 per cent CP, any excess being costly and injustified.
